Unknown Russian Actor: The state of Ohio has been able to stop an unsophisticated attempt from a threat actor targeting the election on November 5th. The attack was originally traced back to Panama, but further research traced it back to a Russian company. The unsophisticated SQL injection attack did not produce any results as the attack was on the office’s website and not on the machines used for voting. The threat actors were looking for vulnerabilities in the website, but their actual intention was unclear.
Analyst Notes
Although the attack did not allow the threat actors to steal any information, the attack will still make some feel uneasy about the security surrounding elections, especially with the Presidential election coming up. An Ohio spokesman stated that none of the machines that are used to vote or count votes are connected to the internet, in order to ease the worry caused by this unsuccessful attack.
